Procreate and digital design

Why your Procreate linework is not clean yet

Check stabilisation, zoom, brush choice, scale and tattoo readability before blaming your hand.

Contents

Short answer: a messy Procreate line is not always a hand problem. It can be scale, zoom, brush behaviour, stabilisation or a design with too much detail for the size it needs to become.

For tattoo work, a useful line is not the smoothest line at maximum zoom. It is the line that still reads clearly at final size.

Start with scale

Set the design near the size it will actually be used. Then look at it from normal viewing distance. If the line only looks good while zoomed in, it may not be a tattoo-ready line yet.

Tiny details often create panic. You try to clean them, but the real fix is to enlarge, simplify or separate shapes with more skin space.

Make a repeatable line test

Create a small test with the same brush each time. Include one long line, one circle, one S-curve, one tight corner and three parallel lines.

Use that test before judging a new brush or setting. If every test is different, you are not comparing settings; you are comparing moods.

The four-stroke test

Draw four versions of the same line:

  • Natural hand, low stabilisation.
  • Slight stabilisation.
  • Higher StreamLine.
  • Final-size printed or exported check.

The best option is the one that looks controlled without feeling disconnected from your hand.

Stabilisation without losing your hand

Stabilisation can help long curves, but too much can make the stroke feel late or over-corrected. Raise it in small steps. If the line starts looking perfect but dead, bring it back down.

Tattoo linework still needs rhythm. A clean line with no gesture can make a design feel flat.

Useful line checklist

  • Solid opacity for stencil linework.
  • No accidental grey from pressure opacity.
  • Enough spacing between close details.
  • Outer contour stronger than inner detail.
  • Printed or final-size check before approval.

This checklist is more useful than chasing a magic brush percentage.

When it is not technique

Sometimes the line is hard because the design is asking too much. A tiny face, cramped lettering, decorative texture or overloaded petal cluster may never become clean at the requested size.

In that case, simplify the design before you polish the stroke.

Review before cleaning

Before spending another hour redrawing, squint at the design. What reads first? What disappears? What line can be removed without losing meaning?

Clean Procreate linework is a technical habit, but it is also an editorial decision. The line gets cleaner when the design gives it room to work.
